Optimising an ASP, PHP or ColdFusion site

Most large sites are dynamically generated by a scripting language such as ASP, PHP or ColdFusion. This makes complete sense in terms of content management, but poses a problem for search engines.

Unfortunately, search engine spiders perform poorly on such sites. Some of the more recent programs do attempt to follow dynamically generated links, but even these struggle with a long query string.

If you operate such a site, it's not a lost cause, but it's fair to say that there's a longer haul ahead. While it's possible to match your dynamic structure with static pages, this largely negates the advantage of the generated content. We can show your developers a number of interim fixes to help make the site intelligible to spiders. In the longer term, making us part of the process for developing new content or revising your site will pay dividends in search engine results.
